The Birkenstock Footbed
Footbed edge : Elevated surface to protect the toes.
Toe bar : Guides the toes, promoting the natural rolling movement of the foot. Encourages the natural gripping motion of your feet while exercising your legs and improving circulation.
Cross arch support : Helps shift pressure from the middle to the front of the foot. Mirrors and nurtures the shape and contours of a healthy foot. The four arches ensure even weight distribution.
Suede leather lining : Creates a healthy climate around the foot.
Inner and outer arch supports : Gives the foot support and provides stability for the heel.
Deep heel cup : Gives the foot a firm hold and maintains the heel profile.
Cork Latex Footbed : Extremely flexible, providing a uniquely high level of wearing comfort. Firm and resilient, the base gives your feet the support they need.

Upper jute layer absorbs moisture
Cork latex core – an anatomically shaped cork layer
Lower jute layer – provides stability
EVA outsole – for grip and cushioning
So ditch the socks (until Autumn at least!) and get a pair of these classic sandals. Treat your feet to a pair of Birkenstock sandals which both look and feel great!
One of the key problems with people’s health today is related to their feet! One of the key reasons for this is ill fitting shoes – we all try and squeeze our feet into unsuitable shoes! Use our sizing guide and fitting tips when purchasing your Birkenstocks to help you get the best size for you. Always try on, and break in, your shoes indoors on carpet.
At FootArt we stock the ‘’Regular’’ fit rather than the ‘’Narrow’’ (excluding EVA styles). To check that you have the right size, place your heel within the heel cup (the lower part of the foot bed); your foot should fit inside the edge of the shoe with a few millimetres at both the front and back of your foot. This allows for movement while walking. Your toes and heel shouldn’t touch the rim of your sandals whilst you are standing in them. The extra room is needed to perform the natural rolling motion of the foot without restrictions - as if you were barefoot.
The contours of the footbed should follow the curves of your foot. Don’t worry, the raised arch might feel unusual at first, but as your shoe moulds to the curve of your feet you won’t feel it.
When fitting sandals, the strap closest to your toes should fit comfortably, but not too tight. The other straps should be more loosely fitting to allow your heel to lift slightly off the footbed while walking.
It does take a while to wear new sandals in, the cork footbed will start to mould to your foot. That’s the fantastic thing about Birkenstocks…they DO mould to the shape of your foot, and become an extension of your feet!
